Final Draft Graphic Design Project

The inspiration for my graphic design project was self-love. I wanted to create a magazine advertisement that promoted body positivity which will hopefully encourage all women to love their bodies. Growing up, I rarely saw images of women who looked like me. I am African American, with a really thick natural afro, and a curvy/plus size hourglass figure. I grew up primarily seeing images of petite Caucasian women with straight blonde hair and blue eyes. These women are just as gorgeous to me now as they were when I was growing up, but there is a standard in our society that this is the only type of beauty that should be accepted. I chose to include a picture of Serena Williams in my design project because she is one of the women I remember relating to when I was growing up and thinking to myself, she looks just like me. I chose the picture of the woman holding the tape measure up to her waist, because women often feel they have to be a certain size to be considered attractive. I specifically wanted this picture to be in black and white to evoke emotion and bring awareness. Countless women compare themselves to other women and end up hating the bodies they were blessed with naturally. I wanted the two body positivity pictures to not only be in color, but with added vibrance, to show that all women’s bodies should be celebrated and appreciated—from athletic body types to full figured and every other body type in between. I feel the added color to these images will influence my audience to see beauty in different body types and realize that all women should be confident. Overall, my design process was simple yet challenging. I didn’t want to create one image where the 3 images became fluid. I wanted to keep them separate and let each image stand on its own and be powerful. I received really great feedback from my peers. They advised me that I should center the text, change the font color, add a border, and include a picture of an ethnic woman. I thought all of their advice was great and could really enhance my project, so I implemented those changes into my final draft. I’d like to give credit to each of the website where I found the images. Each of these images are licensed to use under a free-to-remix license.

Graphic Design Project (Draft)

The inspiration for my graphic design project was self-love. I wanted to create a magazine advertisement that promoted body positivity which will hopefully encourage all women to love their bodies. Growing up, I rarely saw images of women who looked like me. I’m black, with a really thick natural afro, and a curvy/plus size hourglass figure. I grew up seeing images of petite women with straight blonde hair and blue eyes. These women are just as gorgeous to me now as they were when I was growing up, but there is a standard in our society that this is the only type of beauty that should be accepted. My goal was to show images where you could not see the faces of these women. I feel we as human often create opinions about people on what we see when we see their face. Rather than focusing on the women’s facial beauty, I wanted to pay homage to the beauty that each of their bodies have and appreciate the differences in them. I chose the picture of the woman holding the tape measure up to her waist, because women often feel they have to be a certain size to be considered attractive. I specifically wanted this picture to be in black and white to evoke emotion and bring awareness. I chose the two body positivity pictures to be not only in color, but with added vibrance, to show that all women’s bodies should be respected and appreciated from athletic body types to full figured and every other body type in between. I did run into a challenge when creating my graphic design project. I used a lot of the techniques that we learned in the Photoshop tutorials and I was not happy with the way my project was turning out. I decided to use a new tool which was the Photoshop curve tool. This tool made each of my images pop in a way that inspired me to not scrap the entire project. I’d like to give credit to each of the website where I found the images. Each of these images are licensed to use under a free-to-remix license.

My idea for the graphic design project is for women to feel empowered to have self-love for themselves and their bodies, no matter the shape or size.

Strength in Sisterhood

Hey Everyone!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my first official blog post! I have decided that the theme of my blog is going to be Women’s Empowerment. The topic of Women’s Empowerment is so important to me because for some reason in 2019 there is still so much confusion around it. After having some conversations about Feminism with different men and women in my life, there is a common belief that “feminist hate men”, and I personally believe that that statement couldn’t be any further from the truth. Women’s empowerment to me is letting women know that they can accomplish anything that they put their minds to. Women’s empowerment is letting women know that they have a support system made up of both men and women, who encourage equality of the sexes. It is my intention to use this space to not only share ways that I have learned to empower myself, but also share the stories and testimonies of powerful women that will hopefully inspire my audience. I plan to collect original material by posting photos and videos that I’ve taken of myself and other influential women in my life so that I own all of the copyrights. I also plan on conducting in person interviews with said women and posting the audio recordings. One idea that I have for the graphic design project is to create a poster or calendar that has inspirational quotes that women can say to themselves every day. Another idea that I have is to create a video story of what life is like being a woman, by showcasing different things that women go through in a day. I think both of these methods will not only bring awareness to women empowerment but will also be tools that women can use to feel empowered, strong, and motivated.
